From the 106th to the 107th General Assembly, the Democrats lost 1 Senate seat and 14 House seats to Republicans. They did not gain any seats in either body, and no Democratic incumbent lost to a Democratic freshman. 12 House seats changed from a Republican incumbent to a Republican freshman. 3 Senate seats changed from a Republican incumbent to a Republican freshman. Two of the three Republican freshman Senators – Bell and Campfield – served in the House of the 106th General Assembly.
These changes gave the Tennessee GOP a majority in both the State House and the State Senate. Republican Diane Black ascended from the State Senate to the 6th District seat in the U.S. Congress, joining a total of seven of nine GOP candidates holding Tennessee’s Congressional seats. The Governor’s mansion was also taken by the Republicans. Our two U.S. Senate seats were already held by Republicans. Below is a complete list of changes for the General Assembly, with links for learning “where are they now” or familiarizing yourself with our new representatives.
